Why this certificate?

The Health Systems Engineering Graduate Certificate program allows engineering students who are interested in working in healthcare to attain specific skills that will help them in securing a healthcare position. The healthcare field is very different than manufacturing, service, utilities, financial, etc., with an entirely different language and culture in healthcare targeted toward patient safety and health. Students who complete the certificate will have a credential that will open up access to working in the healthcare field as an engineer.

Who is eligible?

Those who hold a bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent from an institution of recognized standing are eligible (exceptions may be approved if the student has the background needed to succeed in the graduate engineering courses).

There is no GRE requirement.

What can you expect?

Upon program completion, students should be able to:

  • Describe healthcare delivery systems and their components, including the workforce, financing, insurance, payment functions, technologies, data sources, reporting requirements and the conundrum of cost, quality, and access.
  • Design efficient and patient-centered healthcare delivery systems using traditional industrial engineering methodologies while understanding the difference between working in healthcare vs. other industries.
  • Apply macroergonomic and systems concepts to healthcare systems to prevent human error as well as injuries to healthcare workers and patients. Choose and implement appropriate technology as part of the system design.
